Legit Security has just nominated their employee of the month, Nathan Cox. "Mr. Nathan Cox" does not have a license to be a security guard issued thought the NM PI Board. I checked by all possible means available. He carries a weapon. On December 3, 2008 at 9A.M. the Board verified that there is a man named Nathan Torrez (not Cox who received a level 3 license 11-6-08). The Board said that he first became licensed as a Level 1 guard in October 2008.
See the posting on Legit's Company blog:
Lt. Cox has been honored with the Employee of the Month Award for November. His overall performance and willingness to go “above and beyond” made Nathan Cox the clear choice for this award.
Lt. Cox started with Legit Security in 2008. In his time with Legit he has moved up in the company fast. Lt. Cox started as an officer and has move up to Patrol Lieutenant, as well as being on the Legit Security elite unit. Lieutenant Nathan Cox started with Legit Security after working at the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, NM. Lt. Cox found that he could make a difference in the world working in the Security industry. Instead of pursuing a career with his Commercial Driver’s License, Nathan Cox made a change in his life and applied for a position as a Security Officer with Legit Security.
I've heard that Mr. Cox is a nice guy but he was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, attempted possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia in 2006. He made the following plea deal:
"as per plea agreement- defendant pled guilty to attempted possess a controlled substance and posession of drug paraphanalia- FELONY charge is reduced to misdeameanor- place on one year supervised probation with treatment for METH ADDICTION- 2 counts to run concurrent- must pay $142 court fees- 6-13-07"
He remained on probation through the Magistrate Court through June 2007.
He has his own myspace.com page: CLICK HERE!
He says the following about his time with the company (myspace.com):
Legit Security
Albuquerque, Nm Us
Patrol/N.A.T.F. Officer
1/25/07-Current
(He changed the dates of employment to 1-25-08 on December 3, 2008- LOL)
~I saved electronic copies...
The nomination for the employee of the month award says differently. "Lt. Cox started with Legit in 2008.." ~ another Legit lie
This is a section taken out of the licensing statute for the state of New Mexico.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor? This includes deferred
prosecution, judgment, pleas of guilty or nolo contendere to a felony or misdemeanor in
any state, territory, district of the United States or a foreign country.Have you ever been arrested for a felony or misdemeanor?
• I cannot work as a security guard until I have received a registration card issued by the
Regulation and Licensing Department.
• If I am registered as a Level One Security Guard I can not carry arms.
• If I am registered as a Level Two Security Guard I can carry arms but can not carry a firearm
• If I am registered as a Level Three Security Guard I may carry a firearm if I have been qualified
I asked Steve Herrera, PI Board Administrator, if an arrest for possession of drugs was an offense that would prohibit a guard getting a license and this the the e-mail he sent to me:
Robb-
16.48.3.9 A - Any uniformed registrant or licensee shall not consume
alcoholic beverages or controlled substances while on duty.
Possession of drugs would also violate plenty of parts in the Boards
Code of Ethics and Creed of Conduct. 16.48.1.8
61-27B-16 (B) 4 - Has not been convicted of a Felony or an offense
involving dishonesty, an offense involving an intentional violent act or
the illegal use or possession of a deadly weapon and has not been found
to have violated professional ethical standards.

Steve,
On a separate note, is drug possession a reason for denial of guard
licensing?
It is impossible to know if Nathan Cox and Nathan Torrez are the same person. The name discrepancy is strange and the Board has no record of a "hyphenated" last name or a name of Torrez-Cox or Cox-Torrez. I recorded the conversation with the Board to verify the accuracy of the information I was given.
Legit Security says that my post about Mr. Cox was incorrect. They stated this:
"I am looking at a copy of the Security Guard Registration Level 3 card submitted to Nathan L. Torrez-Cox with the registration number 38044. Although the RLD doesn't update their website very often.."
Well, I did what the state of NM tells us to do. Is he using an alias? Is his legal name Cox or Torrez? Did he change his name to disguise the drug charge? Check the computer system. CLICK HERE.
I checked by name , DOB and SSN for this individual. I guess there two issues at hand:
- Does this man actually have a license and if so, why doesn't the state list it in their system
- When was it issued? Mr. Cox shows his employment starting at Legit on January 25, 2007 (while he was still on probation for drug charges) but Legit Security states that his employment began in 2008. This would be pretty easy for the state or law enforcement to verify- don't you think? Yes, I did call probation and parole to verify. Normally, possession a firearm is a violation of probation.

It is just like these morons to post an unlicensed employee on their blog. What a joke. Do they hire anyone who hasn't been arrested? LOL

Haaaa! The PI board's response to your email is comical. I tried to beat an answer out of Donna Tafoya on drug convictions years ago and she gave me the same rap.
While I do believe it's possible to reform yourself after a drug conviction and it should not always be held against you, there definitely needs to be an amendment to the state law that prohibits those with RECENT drug convictions (<5yrs?) from being a security guard. The way it stands now anyone with a misdameanor drug conviction can quite literally walk out of jail and become a level 3 security guard. Now THAT'S scary.
